It's White Squirrel Festival Time
Yes, it's time once again when all Brevard celebrates its white, furry-tailed, tree-living rodents. Start the weekend with the White Squirrel Twirl, one of Sylvan Squares' biggest dances of the year. Friday night, May 25, 7:30 - 9:30, with Stan Russell doing the calling, at St. Timothy United Methodist Church. A workshop will be held from 7:00-7:30 to shakle the rust off.
Prospective Dancers! Visitors! Members!
Welcome to the Sylvan Squares website! Feel free to browse our website and learn more about us. If you have any questions, please check under Frequently Asked Questions and, if you cannot find your answer there, just fill out the form and your question will be answered as soon as possible.
Why Square Dance?
It Makes You Feel Good!
It gets you out of the house and with a group of friends and neighbors who are looking for laughter and enjoyment. Mistakes - and there can be many - are part of the fun because everyone, no matter the skill level or amount of experience, makes them. Opportunities to dance abound at Sylvan Squares, other clubs in WNC or almost anywhere around the world, and at such community events as Brevard's 4th of July celebration.
And It's Good for You Too!
Square dancing is not particularly physically challenging but it burns calories - 200 to 400 per half hour. It helps keep dancers mentally sharp, too, as it requires learning the basic calls through instruction and practice and how to follow the ever changing combinations of calls created by our callers.
New Dancers
Sylvan Squares will be holding classes on the normal schedule starting in September. Check back for more information in mid-summer. Classes will take place at St. Timothy United Methodist Church on Asheville Highway (click here for the location). The class will teach all the calls necessary to be a successful Mainstream (beginning level of Western Square Dance) dancer. For reference, here is the Mainstream Lesson Plan. Marty Northrup will be the instructor.

We welcome students from other clubs to dance with us and learn to listen to other callers. Our dances are held at St. Timothy Methodist Church in Brevard from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of every month. For those interested in getting a little more practice, a half-hour workshop starting at 7:00 before we all square up is offered for all dancers.

Our February 10, 2012, Have a Heart dance collected over $500 in cash and household cleaning supplies for Sharing House, a Transylvania County-wide charitable organization. Dancers were asked to bring household cleaning supplies to the dance, and Sharing House will make them available to needy families throughout the county.
